Let’s talk about good stuff…

OK, for the past several weeks I have written about our economic climate, political races and disgraces and the responsibilities each of us must assume to make our world a better place. Well enough…this week I’m writing about good stuff. You know, the stuff in life that makes us feel good, or at least experience a momentary wave of happiness. Many of you who know me, know I love music. I have an IPOD brimming with every type of music known to the listening ear. This week at Smitten we’re listening to Jessie Baylin, Firesight. She’s not really someone you would place in a distinct music genre, but definitely easy to listen to. You’ll find yourself returning back to her … over and over again.
For those of you that have joined us at our Friday afternoon Wine, Cheese and Retail Therapy hour, know we have recently begun serving fabulous wine selections from our new friends at Wine Authorities, Craig and Seth. I know a lot about clothing and “the fashion industry” and these gentlemen know as much if not more about their wine. Each week I will be serving a red and a white recommended by them. This Friday we will be serving a Garnacha “Lelia”, from Spain, and Torrontes, from Argentina. They have provided us with wonderful region and food pairing information, and will gladly do the same for you. Wine Authorities is located at 2501 University Dr, www.wineauthorities.com. When you do shop please remember to try and shop local…people like me, and Wine Authorities depend on people like you, your neighbors, friends and referrals for our business.
We’ve talked music, wine … what else is there? Oh yes, fashion…The newly arrived hand painted bags by Anuschka are a breath of color and newness in the store, just in time for SPRING!
We hope to see you soon. but in the meantime…

Snow days, Inaugurations and the midwinter blahs…

WOW…what a wonderful time to be an American! Republicans, Democrats and Independents should be very proud of the progress we have made as a country collectively. In the words of the late Tim Russert … “What a country”. I was at home today (like most North Carolinians) because of a snow day. I treasured this “found” day off. I got to watch history with my oldest child, who will be able to vote in our next presidential election in 2012. I hope my generation leaves this country in better condition. I know, we haven’t done so well up to this point…but the wonderful thing about history is, it is never finished and continues to write itself everyday.
So…the holidays are over, we have a new President, the economy is still the pits … now what? Gloom and doom state of the economy media coverage, much of the world is in unrest, and we have several more weeks of cold, gray weather, until we feel and see the first whispers of spring. The midwinter blahs don’t have to get the best of us. Now is the time to take stock of our closets (like our lives) and plan for the new season. Get rid of the old and the “I haven’t worn this in years”…give it to charity, or sell it, and donate some of the money to your favorite cause. It’s something small but it’s your contribution in doing your part, which all of us must do. I guarantee you will feel better. Once you’ve given, treat yourself for doing good. We have an abundance of affordable fun accessories and some lovely new spring clothing (to get you in the mood for the warm weather that will be here before you know it).

Recessions, Accessories, and business as usual…

I just got back from three buying shows in NYC this week. It is always so exciting to see what each new season has to offer. I was concerned the recession we are in combined with the gloom and doom media coverage we constantly hear would dampen the spirits of shop owners like myself and the companies we do business with. However, I was pleasantly surprised that life was as close to “business as usual” as one could hope. There are beautiful fashions in store for all of us…and it is safe to say the fashion world is churning on through the tough times. Accessories are going to be very important to everyone this spring. We have a new shipment of lovely scarves and wraps in every color and fabric. A new jewelry designer, Charles Albert, joins the ranks of our other talented designers. We are stocked to the brim with hair accessories, brooches and bangles of all colors and styles. So…Don’t let the economy keep you from updating your look and uplifting your spirits.
